BASINGER SELLS OFF BALDWIN RING AT AUCTION


Actress KIM BASINGER has sold her 3.7 carat diamond engagement ring from ex-husband ALEC BALDWIN for $59,750 (GBP 33,194).
The 8 MILE star, a noted animal rights activist, auctioned the modern TIFFANY & CO ring and some other jewellery at CHRISTIE`S to raise money for THE PERFORMING ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY.
The group runs a California refuge for abused, retired and surplus elephants, lions, bears and other captive wildlife.
The engagement ring, estimated to fetch between $30,000 (GBP 16,600) and $40,000 (GBP 22,200), was the top-priced item in the auction.
The only other gift on offer from actor Baldwin - whose nine-year marriage to Basinger ended in 2002 - was a multigem necklace which went for $20,315 (GBP 11,286).
Christie`s had predicted it would fetch $8,000 (GBP 4,400) to $10,000 (GBP 5,500).
YOSSI DINA of SOUTH BEVERLY WILSHIRE JEWELRY & LOAN, who says his clients include GEORGE HAMILTON, LIZA MINNELLI and WINONA RYDER, estimates he paid 30 per cent more than the ring was worth.
He says, "I got it for a fan. They`ll pay crazy money for that."

RYDER COMES OUT TO HONOUR GERE


Reclusive WINONA RYDER came out to honour RICHARD GERE in New York on Tuesday night (20APR04), and referred to the veteran actor as her "favourite person".
AMERICAN GIGOLO star Gere was being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement gala dinner at the American Museum of the Moving Image.
And Ryder, who played Gere`s lover in movie flop AUTUMN IN NEW YORK, told her former leading man, "It`s completely an honour for me to be here to honour you, Richard - my favourite person."
But it wasn`t such a fun night for the private Gere.
He said, "I hate these things, especially when it`s focused on me."
Ryder wasn`t the only celebrity who turned up to honour the 54-year-old - SHARON STONE, KIM CATTRALL, LIAM NEESON and DENZEL WASHINGTON were also among the guests.

COURTNEY LOVE, ANNE HECHE, ANNA NICOLE SMITH and WINONA RYDER have been accused of turning showbusiness into a "transparent freak show".
The harsh words come from journalist ANDREW BREITBART, author of HOLLYWOOD INTERRUPTED: INSANITY CHIC IN BABYLON - THE CASE AGAINST CELEBRITY.
He tells American tabloid the NATIONAL ENQUIRER: "Celebrities take advantage of their popularity to denigrate and undermine what`s right in America.
They want to make us believe that their sleazy lifestyles are normal.
"The stars have turned showbusiness into a transparent freak show.
"We admire crazies like Courtney Love, Anne Heche, Anna Nicole Smith and Winona Ryder, who say, `Look at me - I`m a freak.` They may be drug addicts or shoplifters, but they`re still respected because of their fame."
Breitbart, who also believes ANGELINA JOLIE successfully adopted her son MADDOX quickly because of her celebrity status, claims most stars go astray because of their "insatiable egos".
He explains, "The desire to become a star requires an incredible appetite for attention and approval. And this self-obsession invariably becomes a sickness."

Hollywood actor JOHNNY DEPP is a big fan of the porn version of his hit movie EDWARD SCISSORHANDS.
The PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL star was surprised at how "funny" the erotic EDWARD PENISHANDS movies were.
Depp laughs, "I loved Edward Penishands 1 and 2.
"It was low budget and very cheesy, but really funny to watch."
In the original movie, Depp starred opposite his then-girlfriend WINONA RYDER as an artificial man with scissors for hands.
He watched the porn movie and its sequel after Edward Scissorhands`

WINONA SNUBBED BY DEFENCE ATTORNEY


Hollywood actress WINONA RYDER has been rudely snubbed by her defence attorney MARK GERAGOS - who failed to invite her to his Christmas (25DEC03) bash.
Geragos - who failed to clear Ryder`s name of shoplifting charges at Los Angeles boutique SAK`S FIFTH AVENUE last year (02) - invited other clients MICHAEL JACKSON, murder suspect SCOTT PETERSON and rapper NATE DOGG to
the glitzy bash but left Ryder off the guest list.
And sources close to the legal eagle cite Ryder`s guilty verdict as the reason Geragos is trying to distance himself from her.
One whispers, "I think he left her out because he lost her case and he looked bad losing.
"He had a really bad case with her. Here`s a guy who has a potential pedophile and killer on his invitation and he won`t put a shoplifter on it. It`s hilarious."
Gossip site PAGE SIX also notes that Geragos sent one of his fellow lawyers to accompany Ryder for a progress report on her community service that took place on Monday (15DEC03).

RYDER BACK IN COURT


WINONA RYDER was back in court in Beverly Hills yesterday (15DEC03) for a
probation update on her shoplifting conviction.
The GIRL, INTERRUPTED actress was caught stealing clothing from Beverly
Hills` SAKS FIFTH AVENUE store in December, 2001, and she was sentenced a
year ago (DEC02).
But her return to the courthouse was a happier one yesterday - a judge
complimented her on her conduct and thanked her for complying with all the
terms and conditions of her probation.
Ryder, dressed in black and wearing a hunting cap, is now due back in court for
another progress hearing on 26 May (04), and again in a year - when she has
been told the sentence will be reduced to a misdemeanour if she continues to
behave herself.

Hollywood star WINONA RYDER found out the limits of her star status recently
when she unsuccessfully tried to use her celebrity to jump a toilet queue.
The troubled GIRL, INTERRUPTED beauty, who was last year (02) convicted for
shoplifting at the SAKS FIFTH AVENUE store in Los Angeles, was taking in an
art exhibition when the urge to relieve herself struck, reports Britain`s DAILY
STAR.
Unfortunately for Winona, there was a lengthy line for the toilets, so she sent a
friend to ask the man at the front if the star could cut in.
But the infuriated man stormed, "I`ve been waiting 45 minutes. But I might let
you cut in - if you had the decency to speak for yourself."
A shocked Winona replied, "Just forget it," but the annoyed man insisted, "I`ll let
you cut in. I just want you to speak for yourself."
But despite his reasonable offer, the actress stormed off in a huff - and
onlookers gave the man a round of applause.

Biography
Winona Ryder was born Winona Horowitz and named after her the town in which she was born, Winona Minnesota. She grew up in a ranch commune in Northern California where there was no electricity. She is the Goddaughter of Timothy Leary and her parents were friends of Beat poet `Allen Ginsberg` and once edited a book called "Shaman Woman Mainline Lady" an anthology of writings on the drug experience in literature - this included one piece by Louisa May Alcott. Winona Ryder was later to star as Jo in this author`s Little Women (1994). She moved with her parents to Petaluma (near San Francisco) when she was ten and enrolled in acting classes at the American Conservatory Theater. At 13 she had a video audition to the film Desert Bloom (1986), but didn`t get the part. Director `David Seltzer (I)` (qv), however, spotted her and cast her in Lucas (1986). When telephoned to ask how she`d like to have her name appear on the credits, she suggested Ryder as her father`s Mitch Ryder album was playing the background. Ryder was selected for the part of Mary Corleone in Godfather: Part III, The (1990), but had to drop out of the role after catching the flu from the strain of doing the films Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael (1990) and Mermaids (1990) back to back. She said she didn`t want to let everyone down by doing a substandard performance. She later made _Age of Innocence, The (1993)_ (qv) which was directed by Martin Scorsese, who she believes to be "the best director in the world".
