JOHN TRAVOLTA EYES BUCKINGHAM PALACE


Hollywood actor JOHN TRAVOLTA is considering hiring London`s BUCKINGHAM PALACE for his wife KELLY PRESTON`s birthday - because he doesn`t know how else to top the party she threw for him.
Hundreds of the GREASE star`s showbiz pals - including OPRAH WINFREY, TOM CRUISE, MEG RYAN, ROBIN WILLIAMS, SEAN PENN, BARBRA STREISAND, ROBERTA FLACK, CARLY SIMON and TONY BENNETT - were secretly flown to a luxury Mexican resort to surprise Travolta for his 50th birthday in February (04).
And now the actor admits he doesn`t know how to repay his wife - unless he heads for the British royal residence.
He says, "It was pretty amazing. I think I`m gonna have to hire Buckingham Palace and have PRINCE CHARLES sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my wife to make up for this one.
"I cried. I bawled pretty heavily."

DICAPRIO TURNS UP TO SUPPORT DEMOCRAT KERRY


LEONARDO DICAPRIO and JENNIFER ANISTON have helped raise more than $2.7 (GBP 1.8 million) for Democratic presidential candidate JOHN KERRY.
In a move that mixes Hollywood glamour with politics - other Tinseltown stars including BARBRA STREISAND, MEG RYAN and KEVIN COSTNER - joined the fund-raiser that caps a two-day tour of California for Kerry.
Guests, who totalled 1,500, were treated to a mini-concert by YOU`VE GOT A FRIEND singer JAMES TAYLOR and a standup introduction by LARRY DAVID, the star of the HBO drama series CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM.
David jokes that Kerry should consider him to be Vice President, as he considers himself "a nincompoop, a chicken and a liar" - who could offset PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH and balance the ticket.
David adds that if something were to happen to Kerry, those qualities "would obviously be disastrous for anyone who was actually the president."
To which Kerry responds, "You are qualified, to be a Republican."

Hollywood`s star MEG RYAN`s new open-minded policy to film nudity is set to continue - she`ll appear naked again should the part require it.
The WHEN HARRY MET SALLY star famously refused to expose her body on the big screen, but finally stripped off for steamy love scenes for last year`s (03) IN THE CUT - and Ryan`s ready to do it again.
Ryan, 42, says, "I don`t feel remotely ashamed about them at all.
"If it`s exactly right for the film and we`ve negotiated body parts at the start - like, `You can show this, you can`t show that` - then it`s absolutely fine.
"I never tried to make a career out of being a sex symbol, but I can see the door is wide open for that.
"But it can turn on you just as fast."

CAMPION TAKES A SABBATICAL


THE PIANO director JANE CAMPION is planning to take a break from film-making.
The Australian film-maker has decided to concentrate on being a mother to daughter ALICE, nine, following the release of the MEG RYAN-starring thriller IN THE CUT last year (03).
And Campion is glad to be leaving the stress of cinema behind her for a while, although she remains optimistic she will return to her acclaimed career in the future.
She says, "I`ve worked for probably 15 years now, or maybe a bit longer, continuously because the opportunity was there and I was really grateful for it, especially as a woman film director because there have been so fe w of us.
"I just really want to be a mother for a while, for at least four years. I don`t know if I`m trying to sort of rethink how I want to live the rest of my life and I don`t know if I`ll go back to film or not, I probably will.
"What I want to do is create a space where I don`t know what`s at the end of it.``

American TV stars LUKE PERRY and ALYSON HANNIGAN`s London theatre debut was been slammed by critics for their "wooden, tiresomely" acting skills.
BEVERLY HILLS 90210 heart-throb Perry and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER beauty Hannigan have stepped into BILLY CRYSTAL and MEG RYAN`s characters from the
1989 classic romance WHEN HARRY MET SALLY at the West End`s THEATRE R OYAL HAYMARKET.
British broadsheet THE GUARDIAN`s MICHAEL BILLINGTON scathes, "The best thing about a pointless evening is Alyson Hannigan who lends Sally a bright-eyed perkiness that makes the sexual dilatoriness of Luke Perry`s under -cooked Harry even more inexplicable than it is already. Two hours is a long time to spend in a theatre just for a fake orgasm."
And tabloid DAILY MAIL remarks, "Hannigan and Perry`s television fame guarantees no proper stage technique. They both sound squeaky, act woodenly, flounce tiresomely. She resembles a diluted JENNIFER ANISTON, he a poor man`s ROBSON GREEN.
"It`s all about chemistry. Meg and Billy had it in spades. These two have half a teaspoonful between them."

HOPKINS IS HEMINGWAY


OSCAR-winning actor SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS will play American author ERNEST HEMINGWAY in a new movie set during the 1953 Cuban revolution.
The HANNIBAL star will appear alongside MEG RYAN in PAPA, which focuses on a young reporter looking for his family who bumps into the drunk and armed Hemingway.
The film will be directed by ADRIAN NOBLE and is based on a real-life experience screenwriter DENNE BART PETITCLERC had with Hemingway.

OMAR EPPS DEEMS BOXING A `SCIENCE`


Actor OMAR EPPS has a newfound respect for boxing, after finding the sport tougher than street fighting.
Epps, who portrays a boxer alongside MEG RYAN in new movie AGAINST THE ROPES, has learned to appreciate that the sport consists of a lot more than just throwing a punch.
He says, "Boxing truly is a science. When I see two talented boxers go at it, it`s like watching a ballet. It`s all about who`s going to make that millisecond mistake."
Epps says he trained carefully for his role, but was still shocked the first time he got hit.
He adds, "I just went in head first, five hours a day, eating, sleeping boxing, studying tapes. It`s one of my favourite sports so I was up for the task."

MEG RYAN ATTACKS INTERVIEWER


WHEN HARRY MET SALLY star MEG RYAN sparked an air of discomfort during a magazine interview, when she blasted a journalist for asking her personal questions.
The 42-year-old actress agreed to do the interview for the March (04) issue of America`s JANE magazine to promote her upcoming movie AGAINST THE ROPES - but things quickly turned sour when reporter CLAUDINE KO asked a series of questions about her life.
After reacting with hostility to enquiries about plastic surgery, her son JACK and rumours in the press, she finally flipped when Ko asked her about her ex-husband DENNIS QUAID.
She blasted, "What are you reading? The internet? Is there some change in journalism? This is what I`ve noticed. People just ask questions that are so... and I guess a lot of people answer them. It`s a shock. And aren`t you a part of that too?"
When Ko asked Ryan what questions she would ask if she were a journalist, she responded, "I`ve been asked that a million times too. But I can see a real shift, and I`ve been around a whole. I`m not at all interested in
talking about my personal life - not at all interested in stuff like `what if` questions. It doesn`t advance anything."
Ko quickly concluded the interview with an apology, adding, "I guess you`re right, some people will answer the questions and some won`t."

Movie star MEG RYAN feared she`d become a victim of MIKE TYSON`s famous
temper when she argued with him over her identity.
Tyson was convinced the WHEN HARRY MET SALLY star was MELANIE
GRIFFITH when he invited her to take photographs of him working out in
preparation for his Memphis, Tennessee, fight with LENNOX LEWIS in 2002.
The actress admits she was trembling throughout her encounter with the boxer - especially when he became annoyed when he mistook her for ANTONIO BANDERAS` wife.
She recalls, "I somehow got into his dressing room while he was preparing and the whole time I`m thinking, `How did I get into this?` He was kind of ignoring me and then he looked at me and he said, `I seen your mama`s babies.`
"I said, `I don`t know what you mean,` and he goes, `The lions and the tigers.`
"I`m so nervous, and the more I didn`t understand the more angry he got. I thought, `Does he think I`m like an actor who has an animal sanctuary?`
"I said, `I`m not BRIGITTE BARDOT.` I don`t know why I said that. Someone finally pointed out I was Meg Ryan and he said, `I like Meg a lot, she`s a great singer.` It was just so confusing.
"It turned out that he thought my mom was TIPPI HEDREN. When he found out I wasn`t Melanie Griffith, he kicked me out. Later, we went back in and he was very gracious."
