LANE IMPRESSED WITH FIANCE`S CHAT-UP APPROACH:
Hollywood actress DIANE LANE knew fiance JOSH BROLIN was the man for her when they first met - because he didn`t back off upon learning she was a single mum.
The UNDER THE TUSCAN SUN star, 39, was convinced Brolin - who was once engaged to British beauty MINNIE DRIVER - would "run a mile" after learning she had a daughter, ELEONORA.
The OSCAR-nominated actress explains, "I thought he was going to run a mile when he heard that I have a daughter.
"I was eating alone in a restaurant when he came over to say hello. He seemed nice, so he sat down and we started chatting.
"He asked, `What are you up to these days?` I said, `Third grade.` It was a reference to my daughter Eleonora being in school.
"I thought to myself, `This is usually the goodbye moment.`
"Men in Hollywood don`t want complications with mums who are worrying about what time they have to be back home."
But, refreshingly, Brolin - himself a father-of-two - was unfazed by Lane`s family arrangements.
She gushes, "It was the best chat-up I`ve ever had."

LANE ADMITS TO TORTOISE SMUGGLING:
Movie actress DIANE LANE has confessed she once illegally smuggled a tortoise into America - by stuffing it in a pouch she wore around her neck.
The UNFAITHFUL star was modelling in France in the early seventies when she bought the pet from a dealer on the banks of the River Seine in Paris.
She recalls, "I had a pouch crocheted for me by someone which I wore around my neck with this two-pound tortoise in it.
"Since it was hanging from my neck, I had its faeces all down the front of my shirt that I tried to wipe off on the plane.
"They didn`t even check in customs. I came through with a living turtle hanging from my neck. That was 1972 or something. The world was a different place."

LANE AND THERON TIPPED FOR HONOURS:
Actresses DIANE LANE and CHARLIZE THERON have been selected as special
honourees at California`s upcoming SANTA BARBARA INTERNATIONAL FILM
FESTIVAL.
Lane`s tribute, dubbed SALUTE TO DIANE LANE, will take place on 6 February
(04), while Theron will be honoured for OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF THE
YEAR for her work in the movie MONSTER on 3 February.
The 19th annual festival will run from 30 January to 8 February.

DIANE PLANS FOR THE FAST LANE WITH A NEW CAR:
UNFAITHFUL star DIANE LANE is planning to present herself with an early Christmas gift - her first new car in nine years.
The actress currently owns a "mommymobile Volvo" and an ancient car with a patched hole in its convertible roof, but now she has become one of Hollywood`s top actresses after a string of successes, she thinks she should drive a car that matches her new-found status.
She explains, "My car is nine years old. It`s just no cool to drive up anywhere in it.
"It`s time to recycle the vehicles in that horrible American way. I also want to get a satellite system, where all the music is pre-programmed without commercials."

Sultry movie star DIANE LANE refuses to pose nude for PLAYBOY because she saw how the attention upset her mother.
The UNFAITHFUL star has turned down several offers to appear in the men`s magazine - something her mother, singer COLLEEN FARRINGTON, didn`t do in the 1950s.
Lane says, "I`ve seen how difficult it was for her to reconcile the aftermath of that in terms of what people made of it.
"My joke about that is that my mother gave at the office for our family so, hey, it`s like our taxes are paid."
